Liwiec Valley and the reservoir - before the project
Undoubtedly one of the most interesting and most scenic elements of the Wegrow town scenery (the Wegrow County) is Liwiec Valley, being also a nature reserve inscribed in Natura 2000 Network. The first step to create the project was Agreement between the Town and the County (in 2005) concerning the Project execution, then in September 2005 in response to the Marshall’s of Mazowieckie Voivodeship call for proposals announcement within The Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP) Priority I. Development and modernisation of the infrastructure to enhance the competitiveness of regions, an application for financial support was submitted.
The 9th of May 2006 the Board of Mazowieckie Voivodeship approved that application within IROP 1.4 Development of tourism and culture, on the 10th of July 2006 the agreement for the implementation of the project “The usage of Liwiec Valley for tourist purposes” was signed and on the 6th of September 2006 construction works within the Project started.
The reservoir located in Krypy village is the biggest on the 126-km long Liwiec River. At the time it was opened (1973) the capacity was 159000 m3. Within the 32 years of exploitation the reservoir was being silted, in some places even in 70%. At present, due to bottom pollution and lack of essential infrastructure, the reservoir is not used for tourist or recreational purposes. In addition, bad condition of hydrotechnic constructions situated within the reservoir does not allow to keep initially designed water mirror shape. Current amount of water is not sufficient for proper living of water organisms.
The area around the reservoir is still undeveloped – lack of parking sites, proper roads, paths, recreational sites, piers and small architecture objects. There is situated a building after a former boat equipment hire centre on the right bank. Due to poor technical condition this facility is no longer in use.
The old river bed
The old river bed developed next to the road leading from Wegrow to Krypy village as a result of Liwiec River regulation. Since the riverbed changed, the swampy area formed, which successively turns into marshes. This area is in danger of total degradation because of organic pollution and being overgrown by vegetation.
Processes taking place in the old river bed area cause difficulties in using tourist facilities (the municipal camping) situated in the town, on the right of Zeromskiego Street, by the old river bed’s bend. The immediate vicinity of swampy area decreases the attractiveness of recreation and lowers tourist potencial of Liwiec Valley.
